The problems stem from three sources. Firstly, some raw materials in smartphones originate from conflict or unstable countries. The conscientious consumer is understandably unnerved by the environmental and social impact of their electronics purchase. For example, we have all heard about dangerous mining practices in Democratic Republic of Congo and the 2014 spate of suicides at Apple’s Foxconn factories in China. Thankfully, there is a company that is meeting these concerns head-on: Fairphone.

Fairphone launches to consumer demand

Fairphone was launched in 2013 in response to a consumer movement demanding fairer electronics. From the beginning, the company has kept its supply chain and relationships open. It hopes to make a positive impact on the entire value chain of smartphone manufacturing, from mining, design, manufacturing and life cycle.

It is likely that the company will have an impact on how smartphones are made. It has committed to be a part of the B Corp-certification, which grades the social and environmental performance of companies. So far, it has also won various awards, including the German Environmental Award 2016 and the Lovie Emerging Entrepreneurs 2016.

Why are smartphones problematic?

What is so problematic about smartphones anyway? Fairphone spent considerable time and resources on answering this question by compiling research on some of the more problematic elements of smartphones. In a 2017 report, ¹ Fairphone and The Dragonfly Initiative (TDI)² identified ten priority materials in the Fairphone, which could originate from better sources. These are the minerals of cobalt, copper, gallium, gold, indium, nickel, rare earth elements, tantalum, tin, and tungsten. For example, 51% of the world’s cobalt and 42.3% of tantalum originates from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country that scores very low or low with government stability, peacefulness, environmental governance, transparency, ease of doing business and human development index. In the DRC, a significant amount of cobalt is mined using artisanal and small-scale methods associated with child and forced labor, bribery, corruption, and direct support of non-state armed groups. Mining communities are exposed to dangerous levels of contaminated dust and water and are vulnerable to forced relocation.

Even countries that score highly on the development indexes like Canada are not immune to the problems associated with minerals mining. For example, a dormant Cantong mine in Yukon was discovered to have unreported spillages that contaminated local waterways and soil. And in the United States, historic mismanagement of a pipeline waste system from Mountain Pass Mine in California allowed radioactive wastewater to pollute the local desert. The social impact of smartphones
