Recycling is the process of converting waste materials such as plastics into new materials and objects. Recycling prevents the waste of potentially useful materials and reduces the consumption of fresh raw materials, thereby cutting down energy usage and all kinds of pollution. Recycling has been a common practice for centuries as far back as the time of Plato. In Germany there is a colour which will make it easy to sort waste, thus requiring that the citizen’s sort the wastes. Sometimes the whole bin might be in a specific colour, but most of the times only the lid will be colored. The black bin is for general waste, which means they are not re-usable they include cigarette butts, leftover food and nappies; they are usually collected at the doorstep fortnightly. Blue bin for paper examples; newspaper, cardboards, paper bags and leaflets, they are collected every month. Yellow bin is for lightweight packaging especially plastics, cans, aluminum and beverage containers. White bin is for clear glass, green for colored glass and brown for composting such as fruits, vegetables, eggshells and leaves. Pre-sorting has helped the country save more and reduce the risk of contaminating groups of recycled material. Waste such as electrical appliances, like refrigerator, toasters, microwave, these are disposed in the garbage station called the Wertstoffhof, which is found in every area of the neighourhood. There are also large containers on the street for wastes in case there are no containers in some homes, however to maintain peace and order, citizens are only allowed to drop their waste between the hours of 7am till 7pm during the week. The recycle system of both countries look alike in that there is a storage site for each district in both countries, they both also have a sorting system, however, Germany has a better sorting system with colour coding. Another difference is that Germans are paid few cents for returning bottles, this is not so in Japan.
