This idea proved positive for both sides and then it became a signed agreement with both parties as it allowed Singapore to rent land in Johor while using the water available there for free – they both got what they wanted. Then came a war which lasted for a while, and then passed. But during this war, there was a twist in how things would eventually play out, because the British troops present during the war were well on their way, retreating.They blew the pipeline connecting both Singapore and Malaysia. Singapore was left with just a water reserve that couldn’t last for weeks. This led to more demand for water linked to the city’s growth and sustenance, and Singapore acted accordingly. As time passed and the relationship between both countries thrived, Singapore, in 1998, started new negotiations to extend both signed agreements to 2011 and 2061 respectively, and in return the Malaysia government got paid by Singapore. They increased the tariffs, but this still seemed favorable by the Singaporean government as other alternative methods proved to be costlier and less effective. However, the Malaysians persisted with their actions for more, and then the government of Singapore said that Malaysia had no right to alter the price of water. It made no sense. Other countries had similar agreements; like China and Hong Kong, and the Chinese even provided the infrastructure. This broken agreement led to the end. There are currently 4 purification plants across the space of Singapore that outputs about 430 million liters of the NEWater supply per day, most of which is transported and used by large industries and cooling facilities.
