History of the company
An interest in developing more high-performance natural materials led Isaac Nichelson, to meet co-founders, Yitzac Goldstein, a materials scientist who had created materials from recycled fibers and Geof Kime, who in the 1990s successfully pushed for legalization of industrial hemp in Canada so that it could be grown as a more sustainable alternative to synthetic materials. 2 The three have been collaborating for the past two decades through developing ideas on regenerative agriculture and sustainable textile production. However, it wasn’t until 2017 that they launched Circular Systems to bring these ideas to life. In 1960, 97% of textile fibers came from plants and animals. Today, that number is approximately 35%. 3 Petrochemical fibers are now the norm and natural fibers are the exception. Circular Systems S.P.C. may have found a part of the solution through its Agraloop™ platform, which utilizes a range of feed stocks, including oilseed hemp and oilseed flax straw, as well as pineapple leaves, banana trunks and sugar cane bark. Food crop waste is collected from China, North America, and soon Costa Rica to be spun into a natural fiber and woven into textiles. These five crops alone offer more than 250M tons of fiber per year, which equals 2.5x the current global fiber demand. Agraloop™ looks at crop residues as valuable resources, rather than waste. Cooperations
As part of its next phase of growth, Circular Systems S.P.C. is eager to take its message out to the world. Recently, co-founder Nichelson received a fellowship to attend the second annual Levi Strauss & Co. Collaboratory, a special workshop with Levi’s executives with a focus on climate change.
Last year, Circular Systems was also selected to participate in the Fashion for Good Plug & Play accelerator produced by Belgian-headquartered retailer C&A. The Kering Group was also present, which runs brands including Gucci and Alexander McQueen. This accelerator aims to raise the profile of companies working in sustainable fashion and eventually interest the wider fashion industry in their ideas.
Circular Systems also presented at Silicon Valley’s largest and most important tech accelerator, Plug and Play Tech Center in June 2017, which for the first time, hosted companies with a theme around sustainability in tech. Most recently, the company was confirmed as the winner of the coveted 2018 Global Change Award, which recognizes the most exciting sustainable fashion developments. At a ceremony in Stockholm, Circular Systems was awarded a grant of $350,000 from the H&M Foundation, after being selected from among 2,600 applicants, coming from more than 180 countries. The company has partnerships in the works with global brands like H&M and Levis to integrate sustainable fibers into their brands.
