The industry uses many hazardous chemicals, which have a significant adverse impact on the environment and employees. ¹ This is further complicated by a complex value chain from raw material to the factory to the consumer.

According to other studies, 20–30% of leather is discarded as waste during footwear production. ³ In the E.U. tannery, solid wastes amount to about 1,200,000 tons/year. Tanned scraps are toxic and potentially dangerous to human health and the environment due to their usually high chrome contents.

Currently, shoe manufacturers have to sustain high costs for waste disposal and also encounter several problems with local and national environmental laws, because they produce a very large quantity of very polluting wastes. Moreover, waste treatments are very expensive, owing to the presence of toxic compounds, and the high energy consumption involved (for transport, handling, physical treatments, etc.).⁴

Some shoe manufacturers are taking note, and are beginning to make efforts to improve their sustainability scores. But while the giant footwear manufacturers are now taking note and making their first steps at sustainability, other companies have already begun to achieve these targets and more.

History of the company

The shoe manufacturer Allbirds was born when founder Tim Brown teamed up with Joey Zwillinger. Together, the professional soccer player from New Zealand and the American engineer began to design a revolutionary wool fabric made from magical New Zealand merino wool and other natural materials. The company believes that the footwear industry often overlooks Mother Nature’s materials in favor of cheaper, synthetic alternatives and that this should change. ⁷ Today, the company has sold a staggering 1 million pairs of its wool shoes in just two years.⁸

When Brown first launched a Kickstarter campaign to gauge consumer interest in wool shoes, the campaign blew up and he sold $120,000 shoes in four days. ⁹ Brown quickly found Zwillinger to help him execute and deliver on his promise. The upfront messaging and unique material story resonated with customers, and the style became an instant classic.

Today, the staff has grown to 100 people, and the company responds to hundreds of customer comments every week. The company has received $27.5 million in investment so far and has a valuation of $385 million. Innovations and ideas

In a Swedish study of the impact of the shoe industry, results indicated that material production corresponds to the highest environmental impact, with 80% of the total life cycle. The most contributing materials per kilogram included leather, wool, nylon, aluminum, synthetic rubber, PET plastic, PU plastic, and viscose. The study also showed that the trend of moving the production of goods to less developed countries with poor working conditions, health issues and lack of proper environmental legislation is raising even more concerns, not only among customers but also governments and the industry in general.¹²

With these concerns in mind, Allbird designed and developed a shoe that minimizes most of the negative contributions of the shoe manufacturing industry. It achieves this by sourcing their raw materials for their shoes from globally certified, sustainable sources. Instead of the traditional leather, nylon and synthetic rubber, the three main components of Allbirds footwear are wool, trees, and sugar cane.
