Because of its versatility, it is used to make a variety of consumer products, such as food packaging, appliances, electronics, toys, auto parts and equipment. Polystyrene is also used a foam material, because it has insulating and cushioning properties. It is also used for to-go or takeaway containers and disposable tableware at restaurants.¹ Polystyrene is used often by these industries because it is inexpensive, readily available, white in colour, and it also reacts well to manipulation, such as glueing, cutting and painting.²

The Dow Chemical Company invented a proprietary process to make their trademarked polystyrene product “styrofoam” in 1941. Polystyrene is a thermoplastic material that becomes fully liquid at a melting point of 210-249 degrees Celsius. This liquid form allows them to be easily injection molded. However, styrofoam is also a thermoset plastics, which means it can only be heated once. Heating the material causes a chemical change that cannot be reversed. According to Douglas McCauley from the University of California Santa Barbara, polystyrene can get lodged in intestines of sea animals, causing blockages. It also acts like a pollutant sponge, picking up and concentrating contaminants in the ocean. In general, polystyrene is not accepted in recycling programmes, and it ends up in the landfill. Polystyrene is slow to biodegrade.⁵ Discarded polystyrene biodegrades over hundreds of years is resistant to photo-oxidation.⁶ Polystyrene is flammable and can be easily ignited, causing fires in landfills which emit toxic chemicals into the atmosphere.

Due to its chemical characteristics, polystyrene is essentially a single use product and is not recyclable. Some cities have woken up to the environmental impact of single use polystyrene waste products in their landfills. New York has recently banned the possession, sale or offering of single use Expandable Polystyrene Foam (EPS). “These products cause real environmental harm and have no place in New York City,” said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. The reason for the ban is because of the difficult of recycling EPS, which has not been done on a large scale.⁷ New York City follows Berkeley, California, Suffolk County, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, China, India, Taiwan and Zimbabwe, among others.⁸

One such method is thermal recycling, which burns polystyrene waste in municipal incinerators. The method has been tested and found to leave behind carbon dioxide and water vapours. Due to consumer awareness, packaging companies are also developing alternatives, such as corn-based compostable meat trays, starch based packing peanuts made from corn, sorghum or other crops, folded fibre and molded pulp packaging, as well as biodegradable sugar-cane foam.¹²

It is up to business owners, consumers and local governments to demand alternatives to polystyrene products. The natural and organic alternatives may be more expensive at first, but more sustainable for the planet in the long run.
