Trash on the Mount Everest and Difficulties in Moving It

Mount Everest, the path to the highest peak, is not only dangerous, it is littered and smelly as well. With tons of other garbage, you will also find human bodies and human excrement there.

Because of the climatic conditions of the area, it is not an easy job to move the trash. The low temperature of the area makes it difficult for people to work there.

Carrying down the huge amount of trash from the mountain requires resources that are not easily available there.

Solid and human waste can only be transported down on the back of a porter, pack animal or a helicopter, and you can imagine the cost one has to pay to use these resources. Therefore, it is not a feasible option.

Even the biodegradable trash cannot be decomposed easily on the summit because of high altitude and low temperatures. Therefore, it is adding an extra ton of waste to the Everest every year.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”2_5″ layout=”2_5″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” undefined=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”0px” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” hundred_percent_height=”no” hundred_percent_height_scroll=”no” hundred_percent_height_center_content=”yes” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”center center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” video_preview_image=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” padding_top=”40px” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” undefined=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”0px” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” class=”” id=””]

Efforts of Nepal Government in Moving the Trash from the Mount Everest

In 2014, the government designed a new rule under which all climbers who wish to scale the Everest need to bring back at least 8 kg of rubbish with them, along with their own waste. If anyone doesn’t bring the additional 8 kg waste, he/she would be fined heavily.

This step of the Government of Nepal has received mixed reactions from people. Experts believe that although it is difficult to carry an extra 8 kg weight from the mountain, as on high altitude, 8 kg feels like 20 to 30 kilograms.

According to a rough estimate, there are more than 200 bodies on the Everest. It is almost impossible to carry these bodies down, and therefore, experts suggest leaving these bodies there and let them stay in peace.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” hundred_percent_height=”no” hundred_percent_height_scroll=”no” hundred_percent_height_center_content=”yes” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”center center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” video_preview_image=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”2_3″ layout=”2_3″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” dimension_margin=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” class=”” id=””]

However, the real problem is in moving the human excrement. It is there for decades, and obviously, unhealthy for humans.

This is not the first attempt at cleaning up the Mount Everest. In 2010, a conservation group brought back more than 25 tons of garbage that included around 11,250 kilograms of human waste only.

Sherpas can also collect cash reward from the government when they bring oxygen bottles back. Back in 2010, more than 36 Sherpas united and scaled the dead zone – above 8000 meters where oxygen level drops tremendously – and brought back 2000 kilograms of garbage.

Tackling the Waste on Everest

In 2013, a group of volunteers climbed up the Everest for the cleanup. Due to the efforts of that group, more than 10 tons of garage was removed over a period of 10 years.

Additionally, the group established waste management systems not only for the tourists but also for villagers. More than 15 waste treatment facilities were also successfully established there.

Moreover, technology is also playing its role in cleaning the environment. A device called Clean Mountain Can is used for storing human waste, and thus, promises a cleaner future for the mountain.

The use of biodegradable Hemp plastic bags to collect human waste is also a great idea. These bags can then bring to the base camp, from where local disposable teams can take them over.

Apa – the Super Sherpa and a world record climber – had teamed up with Eco Everest to remove a thousand kilograms of human waste. He also made efforts to highlight the effects of the global climate crisis.[/fusion_text][fusion_builder_row_inner][fusion_builder_column_inner type=”1_3″ layout=”1_3″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” hover_type=”none” link=”” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” dimension_margin=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no” border_position=”all”][fusion_counters_circle animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””][fusion_counter_circle value=”10″ filledcolor=”#fe717e” unfilledcolor=”#5bb45a” size=”220″ scales=”no” countdown=”yes” speed=”1500″]10[/fusion_counter_circle][/fusion_counters_circle][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” class=”” id=””]

In 1991, the Government of Nepal, National park, and the local communities with many others founded the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC).

This organization collects as much garbage as possible from the base camp of the Everest and base camps of other mountains every year after the climbing session ends. The teams of this organization also clean up the trekking trails.

Similarly, Namche Youth Club also helps in managing waste on the Mount Everest. The non-degradable waste produced by the locals and tourists is collected and incinerated in the pit which is built for the purpose.

Eco Everest Expedition is another organization formed by different private tourism companies that help in cleaning up the mountain.
