Why must we teach our kids about recycling?

If we want to make sure that a healthy environment is available for our children to grow up in and the existing resources survive for their use as well, it is the younger generation that we must teach recycling to. To do that, we must also instill this responsibility into ourselves. Although it may seem like such small efforts from children might not have much of an effect on the environment, we need to remember that we are slowly molding the brains of tomorrow for a better future. The passion for recycling that we cultivate in their minds today is going to pay off with a better future.
Now that we understand why the young generation needs to be passionate about environmental wellness and recycling, what’s more, difficult to understand is how to actually do so. Is adding a chapter on ‘Recycling’ in their textbooks good enough? Is verbal communication enough for the cultivation of the good habit of recycling? Although it could act as a major step in favor of the issue, it is not enough. Unless we show our kids with practical examples of what we mean, not much is going to have a lasting impact.

As already pointed out, a single chapter of a book or a single lecture on the topic is not going to teach them much. You need to, as parents, instill this passion in your kids from early childhood and not just rely on their school teachers and academic activities to do it for you in a couple of hours at school. For younger kids who will not have the patience for lengthy discussions, you can find some interesting bedtime stories which reflect upon the benefits of recycling. For older kids, try to have frequent discussions laying stress upon the advantages of recycling and their responsibilities to the environment as inhabitants of this planet. Ask them for ideas and let them be creative to see what good they can make out of waste.

Discussions are a good start but developing a family that is responsible towards the environment should be your ultimate goal. This goal will only be achieved through practicality. Don’t let the water running for too long and make sure your kids are also careful. Make sure that they understand the importance of resources and their need to be conserved. Teaching recycling in schools
