United Nations Environment programme, also known as Global Environment Faculty has launched a global lighting bulb recycling and control initiative which goes by the name of en.lighten.

Launched in September 2009, this project encompasses the assessment of over 100 global countries. Most of these countries, almost 19, hail from the MENA (the Middle East and North Africa) region.

This project is aimed at evaluating the cost reduction and CO2 emission reductions to focus on more energy efficient lighting. It is also aimed at the evaluation of economic and environmental benefits which can be achieved by phasing out the use of inefficient lighting bulbs such as incandescent and CFLs.

Middle Eastern countries are now more focused than ever on the eradication of energy-wasting incandescent. Six countries including UAE, Lebanon, Turkey, Morocco, Iran, and Egypt have kick-started the environment saving campaign by distributing tens of thousands of CFL bulbs which will replace common lighting bulbs.

Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, and Egypt have announced a ban on the selling of incandescent bulbs.

Qatar also plans to phase out the selling of incandescent to achieve the environmental goals.

Recycling of waste lighting bulbs can be done easily at the recycling centers installed at local hardware stores. All you have to do is figure out which store is offering this facility, take your e-waste there and recycle it on your own.
