It is fun to pop off the wine cork but have you ever wondered what the small piece of wood goes through after that? To be crystal clear, a cork is worth more than getting the thrills when opening the wine bottle.

Recycling the cork is a good way to reprocess the material used inside it. It might have sounded a bit crazy when you first heard about recycling that little fellow, but believe it, it’s beneficial is every aspect.

What is a cork made of

Why should we consider recycling a cork, what is inside it? This section tackles the sole question that comes into every person’s mind.

So basically, a cork is made from the bark of a Cork Oak or Quercus Suber tree. The bark is the outermost layer of stems and roots of woody plants. One does not have to chop off the whole tree to produce a cork. As a matter of fact, recycling a cork produces wood without sacrificing the trees and disturbing the natural cycle.

The bark is elastic, strong and impermeable to air. That makes it valuable and worth recycling.

Renowned as the most eco-friendly alternative to leather and plastic, cork has just made its comeback to make environment greener than ever. Cork holds the pros of being biodegradable, natural, recyclable and renewable which makes it the true best friend of our surroundings.

Cork is a naturally occurring material that is waterproof, elastic, fire-resistant and buoyant, making it the finest contender for an eco-friendly harvested material. Furthermore, cork that is made up of bark captures carbon dioxide and each time it is harvested the rate of absorption increases creating a win-win situation for both the environment and extractors.

Petit Liege association took charge of the Recyork movement 15 years ago to collect and recycle the corks. Unfortunately in 2011 Petit Liege abandoned the scene and De Vlaspit decided to take charge of this revolution bringing in more professionalism and reliability. This movement was named Recycork and the leaders plotted 900 collection stops all over the country.
