It is particularly difficult to separate the pile from the coarse backing material on which it is mounted and therefore hard to recycle. Various recycling companies have been trying to overcome this challenge of separating the carpet material from the backing with little success. Nevertheless, some recyclers have found a way through and are using advanced methods to separate the two components.

How to recycle carpet
It is almost impossible to recycle carpet for various reasons. First, the chemical composition of most carpets includes latex and PVC which are almost impossible to recycle. The only viable way to overcome this challenge would be to make carpets out of a single chemical component that can be reused and recycled. For example, companies such as Mohawk, a United States based company, has devised a way of manufacturing carpets from polyester alone. By partnering with other companies such as DSM (Dutch-based) and a startup called Niaga, they were able to come up with an innovative solution of making fully recyclable carpets out of polyester.
Since the manufacture methods of most carpets emerge from the 1960s and 1950s, they contain multiple layers with each having different materials. When ripped up, they leave tack marks and scrapes on the hardwood floors. New technologies and design are trying to address this challenge while making sure that the end product is fully recyclable and does not end up in the landfills.
Back then, carpet manufacturers were not thinking about recycling and most carpets were made of multiple layers from the face fiber (where you normally walk on) to the backing layer. Chemicals were ideal in gluing together the various material and attaching them to the PVC or latex backing.
Recycling and sustainability have become major responsibilities for both manufacturers and consumers. Despite considerable efforts in recycling, carpets seem to be intractable. Carpet recycling would ideally involve a lot of costly steps in sorting out and purifying all of the different materials. As a result, recycling is not feasible, and in any case, a hike in price would diminish the profits for most carpet companies who choose to recycle.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”2_5″ layout=”2_5″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” undefined=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”0px” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” hundred_percent_height=”no” hundred_percent_height_scroll=”no” hundred_percent_height_center_content=”yes” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”center center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” video_preview_image=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” padding_top=”40px” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” undefined=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”0px” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” class=”” id=””]
