One example of unintended impact is the use of leather clothing items. While untreated leather hide is biodegradable, most of finished leather products are not. In order to make leather workable and durable for use in a range of products, it must go through a tanning process. Tanning involves large amounts of water and a number of toxic chemicals that can contaminate the soil and waterways.

To reduce the environmental impact of leather, it is recommended to recycle it. Recycling leather scraps that are discarded during the manufacturing process, and redirecting these scraps into other industries diverts materials from the landfill, reduces demand for virgin leather production and reduces the need for chemical tanning processes. Whole leather scraps can be used in small goods manufacturing such as bags, belts and wallets or it can also be ground up and reprocessed for use in products such as leather tiles or portfolios.¹

Moreover, waste treatments are very expensive, owing to the presence of toxic compounds, and the high energy consumption involved (for transport, handling, physical treatments, etc.).³

Another example of how consumer choice affects the environment is cotton clothing. According to the Bremen Cotton Exchange, cotton is fully biodegradable, and can degrade into soil within six months. Pure cotton fibres that make their way to the sea are also biodegradable, and do not cause any harm to sealife.⁴

However, the problem is that most cotton clothing is manufactured with toxic chemicals and dyes that are mixed with artificial fibers. These processes end up harming the environment. For example, while cotton rags can biodegrade in 1-5 months, nylon fabric will take 30 to 40 years to biodegrade.⁶

Cotton recycling is difficult because separating the cotton from the artificial fibres is too expensive to justify the cost of the recycling process. Also recycled cotton that is re-made into new clothes is not as durable as normal cotton. However, some groups are starting to advocate recycling cotton clothing into fibres that can be used for insulation, upholstery and carpets. The conclusion we come to through looking at these examples is that consumers have a big impact on the environment with their everyday choices, including the clothing that they buy. Cotton and leather, while both natural materials, can have an unintended heavy impact on the environment, depending on the amount of dyes and toxic materials used in the production process, as well as the choice of how to discard the clothing.

In order to make good choices, consumers must make informed choices. Some of these informed choices are to buy higher quality cotton made with less dyes and chemicals, repair clothing items instead of tossing them into the landfill, and dispose of clothing in a responsible way.

La conclusión a la que llegamos al observar estos ejemplos es que los consumidores tienen un gran impacto en el medio ambiente con sus elecciones diarias, incluida la ropa que compran.
