Once it is time to replace your old sport shoes, you can consider several options such as recycling, donating to a charity or repairing them. But the most effective of these options is to recycle the old, unusable sport shoes. Many companies are offering the opportunity to recycle old athletic shoes. In order to reduce their environmental footprint, many big companies and footwear manufacturers are collecting old shoes that would have ended up in landfills. These shoes are recycled and used for other purposes. One such company is Nike.
Through Nike’s Re-Use-A-Shoe program many worn out sport shoes are collected and transformed into a new material called Nike Grind. Nike Grind is the material used to create new playgrounds, fields, and courts. This has significantly helped in reducing the number of sport shoes that go into the landfills while providing a useful end-product in the form of playgrounds and courts. The program was initiated in the early 1990s as part of Nike’s sustainability goal.
By collecting more than 1.5 million pairs of worn-out shoes each year for recycling and other scrap material, Nike has been blazing the trail for recycling sport shoes.
Other companies and organizations are also actively involved in the recycling process. PlanetAid is an organization that collects second-hand shoes that are beat up or worn out and partners with other companies to recycle them.
Alternatively, donating worn out shoes to charity organizations helps reduce the amount of disposable footwear. Soles4Souls is an organization that collects slightly worn out and second-hand shoes and gives them to needy communities around the world. You can mail them the worn out shoes or drop them off in their goodwill bin.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” hundred_percent_height=”no” hundred_percent_height_scroll=”no” hundred_percent_height_center_content=”yes” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”center center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” video_preview_image=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” padding_top=”35px” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”set_block” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” undefined=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” class=”” id=””]
Where Do They Offer it?
Nike’s Re-Use a Shoe program collects sneakers from all brands and transforms them into a recycled product. To begin the process, you can visit their recycling website and see if you are near a drop off location.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” hundred_percent_height=”no” hundred_percent_height_scroll=”no” hundred_percent_height_center_content=”yes” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”center center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” video_preview_image=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]
What if you are not in their region?
If you live far from any of their recycling centers, you can mail your shoes. As addresses change over time please check their webpages www.nikereuseashoe.com and www.nikego.com.
International Nike locations accept up to 10 pairs of shoes for recycling. You are required to contact the store before visiting.
If you live in Europe, you can mail the worn out sport shoes directly to Nike’s Europe Facility. Here is the address:
Ras/IOK afvalbeheer
Ambachtstraat 4A
2450 Meerhout
Belgium
It is advisable that you look for the nearest collection point before considering the above options. This is to help reduce your shipping costs which would otherwise offset the environmental benefits of recycling. One of which is to save cost. A good idea would be to conduct a shoe collection drive where you can mail them as bulk to one of Nike’s grinding locations.

Once the shoes are collected, they are transported to the closest grinding facility. In the United States, the facility is located in Memphis, Tennessee, while in Europe the facility is in Meerhout, Belgium. Here, they are processed into a resurfacing material known as Nike Grind.
All types of athletic shoes can be collected and recycled. However, sandals, dress shoes, boots and shoes containing metal and spikes are not recyclable. The recycling machines are designed specially to deal with dimensions of athletic shoes and materials.[/fusion_text][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” class=”” id=””]
What Happens With the Recycled Product?

The recycled sport shoes become raw material for creating high performance basketball courts, playing fields, running tracks and tennis courts. Recently, Nike discovered an additional use of the grind in various footwear and apparel products thereby increasing its field of application.
The Nike Grind material is also sourced by various sports companies who use it for construction of playing facilities or other commercial applications.
Recycling sport shoes is effective in reducing the spread of landfills that would otherwise pollute the environment. Besides promoting a healthier and cleaner environment, sport shoe recycling offers opportunities to other industries in the sports sector. Many high performance tracks and playgrounds are made of recycled sport shoes. This promotes sustainability and encourages conservation.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
